ISO Polyester Resin FRP Grating: Properties, Cost & Best Uses

If you have never had to think hard about resin chemistry, there is a good chance the FRP grating on your project is isophthalic polyester. ISO resin FRP grating is the industry workhorse: the default molded and pultruded fiberglass grating that goes into water-treatment plants, food processing floors and general industrial platforms — strong enough, corrosion-resistant enough, and priced where steel used to be. This guide covers what ISO polyester actually is, what it does well, where it stops being the right answer, and how ZeAllgrate builds it.

What Is Isophthalic Polyester?

Polyester resins are made by reacting a diacid with a glycol, then thinning the product in styrene. The acid choice sets the performance. Orthophthalic (ortho) polyester uses phthalic anhydride and is the lowest-cost, general-grade resin — fine for dry indoor trim but marginal outdoors or in damp service. Isophthalic polyester replaces phthalic anhydride with isophthalic acid. The aromatic, more symmetric molecule packs more tightly, cures to a denser matrix, and gives meaningfully better water resistance and corrosion resistance than ortho.

That step-up from ortho to iso is why ISO polyester became the standard for structural grating: it buys genuine moisture and mild-chemical resistance at only a modest cost increase, while staying far cheaper than vinyl ester.

Mechanical Performance

ZeAllgrate ISO polyester molded grating is manufactured with continuous strand mat and woven roving wet-out, at roughly 30–35% glass content. Typical as-tested properties (ASTM methods) are:

PropertyTypical ValueTest Method
Tensile strength~70 MPaASTM D638
Flexural strength~110 MPaASTM D790
Compressive strength~170 MPaASTM D695
Flexural modulus~8 GPaASTM D790

Water absorption<0.5%ASTM D570
Barcol hardness40–50ASTM D2583

Standard panels are 1220×3660 mm (4′×12′), in 25/30/38/40/50 mm thicknesses, with 38×38, 40×40 and 50×50 mm mesh. For stiffer, longer-span decks, the same ISO polyester matrix is used in pultruded grating, where glass content rises to ~70% and stiffness roughly doubles, with load bars up to 60 mm deep.

Corrosion Resistance: Mild to Moderate

ISO polyester handles the environments where steel would rust but heavy chemical attack is absent: damp and wet areas, dilute acids and alkalis, sewage and effluent, atmospheric washdown, and food-grade cleaning chemicals at normal-use concentrations. It is the standard choice in water and wastewater treatment screens, clarifier bridges and odor-control areas.

It is not, however, the right resin for hot concentrated acid, strong caustic, or oxidizing bleach. In those conditions the matrix hydrolyzes, the surface chalks and blisters, and the panel loses stiffness — that is the signal to move up to vinyl ester. A simple rule: if the environment would make steel rust within a couple of years, ISO polyester is in its comfort zone; if it would eat steel in months, specify vinyl ester.

Cost-Effectiveness and Color

Because ISO polyester uses a well-established, high-volume chemistry and standard glass reinforcements, it is the most cost-effective structural GRP grating on the market. It also accepts pigments reliably, which is why the standard color range — grass green, grey, beige and safety yellow — is stable and consistent run to run. UV-stabilized pigment packages are built into outdoor grades. Surfaces include concave, convex, grit-top quartz-sand and smooth; the grit-top delivers dry COF 0.6–0.8 and wet 0.5–0.7.

Typical Applications

  • Water & wastewater — walkways over channels, clarifier access, valve platforms.
  • Food & beverage — processing floors, trench covers and drainage gratings that resist washdown and cleaning chemicals (FDA-contact grades available on request).
  • General industry — mezzanines, equipment platforms, stairs and trench covers where corrosion is moderate but weight savings matter.
  • Pulp & paper — non-bleach areas and machine walkways away from the oxidizing stages.

The practical takeaway: ortho is rarely specified for structural grating at all; ISO is the default workhorse; vinyl ester is the upgrade tier. Choosing between them is an environmental decision, not a brand preference.

Cost in Context: Why ISO Still Wins Most Projects

The reason isophthalic polyester dominates general-industry grating is not that it is the best at anything — vinyl ester beats it on chemicals, phenolic beats it on fire — but that it is the cheapest material that is still genuinely corrosion-proof in ordinary duty. Carbon steel walkways rust within a few wet years and need repainting; stainless steel solves the rust but costs several times more and is heavy to install. ISO polyester sits between the two: it resists the damp, dilute chemicals and washdown that corrode steel, it is light enough for two workers to carry without lifting gear, and it needs no painting over its life. For a clarifier walkway, a food-plant trench cover or a mezzanine, that combination is almost unbeatable on total cost. The art is knowing the exact point where the environment steps beyond ISO's comfort zone — and that is what a resin-selection conversation with our engineers is for.

For most buyers, the practical outcome is simple: start with ISO polyester as the default, and only pay the upgrade when the chemical list, the temperature or a fire rating demands it. That approach keeps the project economical without accepting a material that will need replacing early. ZeAllgrate's standard molded panels are stocked in the ISO polyester grade precisely because it covers the largest share of ordinary industrial walkway and cover projects.

ZeAllgrate ISO Polyester Product Line

ZeAllgrate ISO polyester fiberglass grating covers the full molded panel range plus pultruded profiles, trench covers, handrails and ladder and stair systems. Hardware is SS304/SS316, expansion gap 3–5 mm, minimum bearing 40 mm. Every batch ships with mechanical data (D638/D790/D2583), water absorption (D570), Barcol hardness and a batch COA — and SGS/Intertek and ASTM test reports support submittals.

Send your environment and loads — our engineers will confirm ISO polyester is sufficient, or recommend the vinyl ester upgrade if your chemicals justify it.

Surface Finishes and Slip Resistance

ISO polyester accepts a choice of wearing surfaces, and the finish is chosen by zone rather than by taste. Concave and meniscus surfaces are the standard all-round finish for dry industrial walkways. Convex surfaces shed water and debris a little faster. A smooth face is reserved for areas that must be easily washed down, such as food processing, where texture traps product. The grit-top option — quartz sand bonded into the resin surface — is the slip-critical choice: it delivers a dry coefficient of friction of 0.6–0.8 and a wet COF of 0.5–0.7 per ASTM C1028, which is what keeps walkways safe in wet, oily or washdown service. For food and beverage decks, a grit-top or smooth surface paired with the FDA-grade resin is the typical spec.

Installation and Accessories

ISO polyester grating installs the same way regardless of resin grade, which is part of its cost appeal. Panels fasten with SS304/SS316 clips on a 40 mm minimum bearing, with a 3–5 mm expansion gap between panels and around penetrations so thermal movement does not buckle the deck. Because ISO panels are routinely cut to fit on site, their balanced bidirectional strength matters — a panel rotated or notched still carries the load. Build the rest of the structure from the same family: trench covers for drainage, handrails to OSHA 1910.23 (top rail 200 lbf, 42 in / 1070 mm), and stair treads and ladders with matching nosings. Standard panels ship 1220×3660 mm (4′×12′), and cut-to-size orders are produced against an approved fabrication drawing before manufacture.

When ISO Polyester Is the Wrong Answer

It is just as important to know when not to use it. Step up to vinyl ester if the process involves hot concentrated acid, strong caustic, or oxidizing bleach such as hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide — ISO polyester will chalk and blister there. Step up to phenolic if fire and low-smoke performance on an escape route is the governing requirement. And if you are unsure which environment you actually have, send the chemical list and let our engineers run an ASTM C581 immersion review rather than guessing on price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between ISO polyester and vinyl ester grating?

A: ISO polyester is a cost-effective workhorse for mild-to-moderate corrosion; vinyl ester adds an epoxy backbone for hot concentrated acids, strong caustic and oxidizing bleach at a higher price. Choose by your chemical list.

Q: Is ISO polyester FRP grating UV resistant outdoors?

A: Yes, when ordered in the UV-stabilized outdoor grade with surface veil and pigment package. It is widely used on outdoor walkways and docks; ask for the exterior formulation for permanently exposed decks.

Q: Can ISO polyester grating be used in food processing?

A: Yes — it resists routine washdown and cleaning chemicals. For direct food-contact situations, request the FDA-compliant resin grade, which we offer on a project basis.
