General (6)

What is FRP grating and what does it replace?

FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) grating is an open-grid panel of glass fibre in a polyester, vinyl ester or phenolic resin. It replaces steel and cast-iron grating where corrosion, weight, electrical insulation or anti-slip matter. See our selection process and molded grating range.

What is the difference between FRP, GRP and GFRP?

They describe the same material: FRP, GRP (glass reinforced plastic) and GFRP are interchangeable; 'fibreglass' is the British spelling. ZeAllgrate manufactures both molded and pultruded grating under all these names.

How long does FRP grating last?

With the correct resin, ZeAllgrate FRP grating delivers typically 20+ years with no painting in corrosive service, vs. steel that corrodes within a few years. Service life is set by resin and environment — see the sustainability and service-life article.

Is FRP grating safer than steel?

It is non-conductive, non-sparking, non-magnetic and inherently anti-slip, and it will not rust into a slippery surface. See electrical insulation and anti-slip surfaces.

Where is FRP grating commonly used?

Walkways, platforms, trench covers, stairs and drainage in wastewater, chemical, power, marine, food and solar applications. Browse the industries and technical library.

Do you supply a complete system or just panels?

We supply panels, covers, profiles, handrail, ladders/stairs and clips & accessories as one matched package.

Product Selection (6)

Molded vs. pultruded FRP grating — which do I choose?

Molded is bi-directional, impact-tough and economical up to ~1.2–1.5 m spans; pultruded is ~2x stiffer for long spans and heavy, uni-directional loads. See selection process and span/load.

Which resin should I specify?

Isophthalic (ZeAll ISO) for general industry and dilute chemistry; vinyl ester for strong acids, oxidizers and chlorine; phenolic for fire/smoke-critical zones. Match it to your chemical list in the chemical resistance guide.

What surface should I choose — concave, convex or grit-top?

Concave/convex are the standard inherent anti-slip finish; grit-top (bonded silica) gives maximum wet traction for permanently wet, food and marine areas. See anti-slip surfaces and the COF data article.

Do I need mini-mesh for accessible routes?

Yes — ADA requires openings ≤13 mm (1/2 in). Standard mesh fails; 12.7 mm mini-mesh passes. See the ADA mini-mesh article.

What is covered (solid-top) grating?

A resin skin over the bars that retains product/liquid on the surface for food, pools and trench covers. See grating covers and the cover selection guide.

Which thickness and mesh size do I need?

Thickness and mesh are chosen by span and live load from certified load/span tables. Send span, load and occupancy and we return the recommended configuration.

Technical & Engineering (6)

What load can FRP grating carry?

Molded panels carry typical walkway loads; pultruded panels carry heavier loads and longer spans. Values come from certified load/span tables with 4:1–5:1 safety factor and deflection limits — see span/load calculation.

How do I calculate the required span and deflection?

Design to a deflection limit (L/100–L/200) and a working-load safety factor; see the worked examples in how to read load-span tables and span/load calculation.

How does FRP expand with temperature?

FRP is orthotropic — it expands ~2–3x more across the panel than along the bars. Size gaps from ΔL = L·α·ΔT; see thermal expansion and outdoor thermal design.

Is FRP affected by fatigue and vibration?

Yes — size for cyclic wheel loads and check natural frequency to avoid resonance. See fatigue & dynamic loading and vibration & natural frequency.

What fire rating is available?

FR grades meet ASTM E84 Class B; extra-FR reaches Class A (≤10 flame spread); phenolic gives the lowest smoke/toxicity for escape routes. See fire ratings.

How do I design connections and fastenings?

Use bolted/clipped joints (FRP cannot be welded), SS316 hardware in chloride, snug torque and one fixed/one sliding support. See connection design details and structural connections.

Installation (6)

Can FRP grating be cut on site?

Yes — with carbide-tipped tools and dust PPE. Band or seal every cut edge. See cutting & cut-outs and the installation guide.

How many clips and what spacing?

Fasten every support intersection: minimum four clips per panel, spacing ≤1200 mm. Choose clip type by panel style — see clips & accessories and connection details.

What torque should I use on clips?

Snug only — M8: 8–12 N·m, M10: 15–22 N·m. Never use an impact wrench. See the fastener torque article.

What gaps and expansion joints do I need?

3–5 mm standard at ends and abutting edges; 6–8 mm on long/hot panels; one end fixed and one slotted; dividers every 6–9 m. See thermal expansion.

What bearing length is required?

≥50 mm on each support for molded, ≥75 mm for pultruded. Flatness ±5 mm over a 2 m straightedge. See installation tolerances & leveling.

Do I need to re-torque after installation?

Yes — re-check clips at 6 months, then annually; panels bed in and relax under clip pressure. See the torque standards article.

Maintenance (6)

How do I clean FRP grating?

Water + mild detergent, soft brush, high-pressure wash ≤100 bar; avoid solvents, steel wool and abrasive pads. See the cleaning & disinfection article.

How do I repair a damaged panel?

Touch up minor surface damage with matching gel-coat; replace a cracked or delaminated panel — modular design makes swaps easy. Never load-bond a severed bar. See QA & inspection.

How often should I inspect the installation?

Annual walkdown for chalking, blistering, veil integrity and clip tightness; increase to twice-yearly in high-vapor or hot service. See cooling-tower maintenance for a worked programme.

What UV / weathering should I expect?

UV-stabilized, C-veiled resin chalks slowly and holds colour for 15–25 years outdoors; unstabilized resin degrades in 2–5 years. See UV weathering.

Do clips and hardware need replacement?

In chloride service the clips outlast no one — specify SS316 and re-torque annually. See connection details.

When should I replace a whole panel?

On audible delamination (tap-test), through-thickness cracking, a severed bearing bar or widespread veil loss. Keep 5–10% spare panels on site — see incoming inspection.

Ordering & Lead Time (6)

What is the MOQ and lead time?

Standard panels: 7–15 days; custom fabrication 15–25 days. MOQ is flexible and samples are available. See downloads and contact us for a current schedule.

Do you supply third-party inspection?

Yes — SGS, BV or Intertek inspection before container closure on request, with a field acceptance checklist. See QA & inspection.

Are the load/span values independently validated?

Charts are validated by physical panel tests; ask for the test report for your grade and configuration. See load/span tables and reading load-span tables.

More Buyer Questions (5)

What load can FRP grating support?

FRP grating is rated by the load table for the panel section and span, not by a single number: the 38 mm molded section carries the standard walkway loads to roughly 1.2–1.5 m spans at the L/200 deflection limit, and 50/65 mm sections and pultruded construction extend the reach. Check the uniform and concentrated columns at the actual span — the point load governs on many walkways. See the span load calculation guide.

How long does FRP grating last?

In corrosive service — chemical splash, seawater, wastewater — FRP removes the paint and replacement cycles that steel cannot avoid, and installations are routinely specified for decades of service. The practical life depends on the resin matching the actual chemical list at concentration and temperature; a correctly specified panel outlives the painted-steel alternative in the same environment. UV-stabilised grades are specified for outdoor exposure.

Can FRP grating be used outdoors?

Yes — specify a UV-stabilised resin for sun exposure and expect a gradual surface change (chalking) over years, which is cosmetic and does not affect structural capacity. Outdoor decks also benefit from grit-top surfaces for wet weather and SS316 hardware where the climate is salty or humid. See the UV weathering guide.

Do you provide samples before ordering?

Samples are provided for evaluation — panels, clips and hardware — so buyers can check the surface, weight and fit before the order. Request the sample with your span and service conditions so the test piece reflects the resin and surface you intend to specify; load and chemical verification is documented in the datasheets and test reports rather than judged on the sample alone.

How is FRP grating packed and shipped?

Panels are packed with separators and edge protection, crated or banded per the export packaging standard, and shipped by sea or air with a load plan for the container. Every shipment carries the packing list, batch certificates and load-test reports. See the export packaging guide for the full practice.
