FRP Grating Case Study | Brewery Brewhouse & Cellar Floor — ZeAllgrate

FDA-grade molded FRP grating over drainage trenches in a craft brewery

Project Overview

Food & Beverage (Brewery) — Project Background

A craft brewery required new flooring for its brewhouse and fermentation cellar, where daily caustic clean-in-place (CIP) washdown, spilled wort and condensation from cold fermentation tanks created a continuously wet, corrosive environment. The previous epoxy-coated concrete floor had deteriorated within 2 years: coating blistered under caustic CIP solution, concrete spalled around the drainage trenches, and spilled wort on the horizontal surface created recurring slip hazards and fermentation of stray yeast. The brewery needed a hygienic, slip-resistant surface that would drain quickly and withstand daily caustic washdown without blistering.

Engineering specified FDA-grade vinyl ester molded grating over the drainage trenches, with mini-mesh in the tank aisles (where small fittings must not fall through) and standard mesh in open walkways. Client identity is kept confidential; the project is described as Confidential Client, a regional craft brewery.

Solution & Installation

What Was Supplied and How It Went In

ZeAllgrate supplied 340 m² of FDA-grade vinyl ester molded grating, with mini-mesh 19×19 mm panels in the tank aisles and standard 38×38 mm mesh in general walkways. All panels were post-cured and washed before dispatch, and delivered with food-contact compliance documentation. FRP flat-bar edge banding was factory-bonded to exposed panel edges so there is no open cut edge that could harbor yeast or bacteria. The smooth surface in tank aisles hoses clean without trapping wort residue; the grit-top walkways handle the continuously wet floor between brewhouse and cellar.

Installation was completed over the brewery's annual two-week production stop, with panels clip-mounted over existing trench frames using SS316 hardware. The open mesh drains wort and CIP solution straight to the trench below, eliminating standing puddles that previously bred stray yeast.

Results & Performance

Outcomes and Inspection Findings

At 1-year inspection, the brewery reported zero blistering under caustic CIP washdown, no wort residue buildup on the smooth surface, and zero slip incidents in the brewhouse. The floor passed the next routine food safety audit without a flooring finding.

  • Compliance: resin documented against FDA 21 CFR 177.2420 for repeated food-contact service.
  • Corrosion: withstood daily caustic CIP washdown with zero blistering or softening; previous epoxy-concrete floor failed within 2 years.
  • Slip: grit-top walkways held wet COF > 0.7 (ASTM F1679); zero slip incidents.
  • Sanitation: open mesh drains wort and CIP solution; smooth surface hoses clean; no yeast harborage on sealed edges.
  • Service life: expected 20+ years vs. 2 years for the previous epoxy-concrete floor.

Engineering Notes

Brewery cellar floors combine wet traffic, caustic cleaning, and sugar and yeast residues that make surfaces slippery. The specification pairs grit-top molded grating for the traffic surface with a resin matched to the brewery's cleaning chemistry — vinyl ester where caustic CIP programmes run — and open-mesh construction where drainage must keep the floor dry between process steps. SS316 clips avoid the corrosion that galvanized hardware would suffer in the wet, caustic atmosphere, and flush covers prevent trip edges at drains and hatches.

What to Specify

  • Grit-top molded grating for wet traffic zones.
  • Vinyl ester where caustic CIP cleaning is used.
  • Open mesh for drainage; flush covers at drains and hatches.
  • SS316 hardware throughout the cellar.
