Industrial Plant Utility Access Platforms

Industrial Plant Utility Access Platforms
An industrial processing plant operated steel access platforms around its process tanks, valve manifolds and overhead pipework. Humid, chemical-laden plant air had corroded the steel decking and fasteners, forcing annual repainting and spot replacement. Operators climb to valves, drains and instruments several times a shift, and wet spillage made the smooth corroded surfaces slippery. The plant needed a corrosion-proof, slip-resistant access system that could be installed over live equipment without a production shutdown. What We Solved
Operators need daily access to valves, drains and instruments above process tanks
Steel platforms corrode in humid, chemical-laden plant air
Wet surfaces around process equipment create slip hazards
Fast replacement was required without shutting down production
How ZeAllgrate Delivered
ZeAllgrate supplied corrosion-proof FRP grating platforms, walkways, handrail and stair treads. Panels were pre-drilled in the factory for the SS316 stand-off brackets and installed over live equipment in planned shutdown windows.
Corrosion-proof decks with zero repainting cycle
Grit-top anti-slip surface in wet service
Lightweight modules install over live equipment
Integrated handrail and stair treads to match

Project Background
An industrial processing plant operated steel access platforms around its process tanks, valve manifolds and overhead pipework. Humid, chemical-laden plant air had corroded the steel decking and fasteners, forcing annual repainting and spot replacement. Operators climb to valves, drains and instruments several times a shift, and wet spillage made the smooth corroded surfaces slippery. The plant needed a corrosion-proof, slip-resistant access system that could be installed over live equipment without a production shutdown.
Design Parameters
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Platforms | 38 mm molded FRP grating, grit-top |
| Total | 3,400 m² platforms + 1,900 m walkway |
| Surface | Grit-top anti-slip; UV-stabilised resin |
| System | FRP handrail + stair treads to match |
| Environment | Humid, chemical-laden plant air; wet spillage |
| Installation | Modular, staged over live equipment |
Engineering Approach
The specification treated the plant atmosphere as the governing input: isophthalic resin for the chemical-laden air, 38 mm molded panels for operator and maintenance loads at platform spans, and grit-top for wet spillage areas. Handrail and stair treads were supplied as an integrated system so fall protection and corrosion behaviour matched the deck. Panels were staged over live equipment in planned shutdown windows, and SS316 hardware avoided reintroducing the fastener-corrosion path that had failed on the previous steel platforms.
Measured Outcomes
- 3,400 m² of platforms installed over live process equipment with zero production shutdown.
- Annual repainting programme eliminated — the plant atmosphere produces no section loss in FRP.
- Grit-top surfaces passed slip checks in wet service; no slip incidents reported since commissioning.
- Integrated handrail and stair treads simplified inspection and maintenance access.
What Made It Work
The plant replaced a maintenance cycle with a permanent asset. The combination — isophthalic resin for the chemistry, adequate panel depth for live loads, grit-top for wet slip safety and SS316 hardware throughout — is the standard formula for utility access in process plants, and it is why FRP has become the default on industrial access platforms worldwide.
Engineering Notes
Plant-scale utility access is managed as a package: the drawing set fixes platforms, walkways and valve access before manufacture, resin is mapped to each zone from the atmosphere and chemical list, and delivery is batched with certificates for site traceability. Grit-top is specified on every wet traffic line, UV-stabilised resin on open exposure, and SS316 hardware throughout — the corrosion-proof construction removes the repaint and replacement cycle of steel across the whole plant.
What to Specify
- Drawing set: platforms, walkways and valve access fixed at order.
- Resin per zone from the atmosphere/chemical list.
- Grit-top on wet traffic; UV-stabilised on exposure.
- SS316 hardware; batched delivery with certificates.
