Offshore Platform Access Systems

60% topside weight reduction with pultruded grating

Project Overview

Offshore Platform Access Systems

An offshore operator needed to upgrade platform access systems while respecting strict topside weight budgets. Every kilogram of steel on the deck costs capacity and fuel. The answer: replace steel walkways with pultruded FRP.

Project Background

An offshore operator upgrading platform access faced a hard constraint: every kilogram of steel added to the deck consumed lifting capacity and ongoing payload budget. The existing steel walkways were also corroding in saltwater and H₂S service, and access routes near electrical equipment required non-conductive surfaces. With topside weight at a premium and remote installation demanding minimal heavy lifting, the operator needed a material that delivered structural capacity, corrosion immunity and weight reduction in one package — and that could be installed by crew rather than crane.

Engineering Approach

The access system was engineered as a complete kit — grating, handrail and stair treads from one manufacturer — so load paths, fastener grades and expansion provision were consistent across the upgrade. Pultruded bearing bars carried the longer spans of main walkways with acceptable deflection at reduced weight. Fire-retardant resin met the flame-spread requirements of offshore escape-route practice, and the UV-stabilised veil protected the surface from long-term solar degradation on open decks. Panel sizes were planned so every component could be lifted and carried by two crew members without crane time.

Measured Outcomes

  • 60% weight reduction on the replaced access systems, directly recovering lifting and payload capacity.
  • Zero hot work required during installation — cutting the permit burden on a live platform.
  • Non-conductive access routes installed around electrical equipment with no earthing burden.
  • No corrosion found on the FRP systems in the first inspection cycles; the steel they replaced required paint maintenance every 2–4 years.

What Made It Work

Weight was treated as the governing design driver — product selection, panel sizes and installation method all served the topside budget. When every kilogram has a cost, a single-source system engineered for hand installation converts a maintenance problem into a permanent weight saving.

Engineering Notes

Offshore access packages are specified to class rules end to end: laminate and resin per DNV/ABS requirements, fire performance data for the grade, load and deflection design to the class criteria, and manufacturing QC with batch traceability so the installed product matches the certified data. Vinyl ester covers the splash-zone chemistry, SS316 hardware carries the fixings, and the non-conductive, non-sparking construction suits the hazardous platform environment. Involve the class surveyor at design stage so the documentation package matches what the project needs.

What to Specify

  • Laminate and resin per DNV/ABS class rules.
  • Fire performance data supplied for the grade.
  • Vinyl ester in splash zones; SS316 hardware.
  • Manufacturing QC and batch traceability documentation.
