Food & Beverage FRP Grating: Washdown Floors, Hygiene & Compliance

Food and beverage plants are washed down every shift with hot water, caustic soda, acids and sanitizers, then left wet and slippery. Concrete floors pit, rusted steel grating sheds metal flecks into product streams, and epoxy coatings delaminate under repeated thermal and chemical attack. Elevated FRP grating has become the preferred washdown floor in dairies, breweries, meat and poultry processing and bottling halls because it does not rust, does not support microbial growth on its surface, drains instantly and cleans with the same caustic washdown the plant already uses. This article covers where ZeAllgrate food-grade FRP grating fits, how to specify it for wet and oily service, and how it compares with stainless steel grating.

Why Elevated FRP Grating Is Used in Washdown Areas

Wet processing floors are a triple problem: chemical attack, slip hazard and drainage. The standing surface must survive hot caustic on a daily basis, remain grippy when covered in water or product, and let effluent fall through without pooling. Concrete and epoxy floors fail on all three: they pit under caustic, become slippery when wet, and require continuous re-coating. Elevated FRP grating addresses them together. Processors solve all three by raising the working floor above a sloped concrete plinth and laying FRP grating on steel or FRP supports. Product drips, washdown water and sanitizers fall through the open mesh to the plinth below and drain away, leaving a dry standing surface for crew. The open area — typically around 65–70% on 38×38 mm mesh — is what makes the design work.

FRP is non-porous (water absorption below 0.5% per ASTM D570), so it does not wick organic material into the deck. It does not rust, so iron oxide staining — a recurring recall and cosmetic problem on steel grating — disappears. It is also easy to clean: the same hot caustic and acid washdown that the plant uses on equipment is sprayed straight over the grating.

Where ZeAllgrate FRP Grating Goes in a Food Plant

  • Dairies — processing hall floors around pasteurizers and separators, CIP return areas, whey drainage decks.
  • Breweries and distilleries — brewhouse platforms, fermentation vessel access, bottling and canning line catwalks.
  • Meat and poultry processing — evisceration and cut-up floors, rendering and washdown galleries where water volume is highest.
  • Bottling and canning — line-side walkways, palletizing area decks, caustic tunnel surround floors.
  • Fruit and vegetable processing — washing, sorting and blanching area floors where dilute acids and brines are present.

Chemical Resistance: Caustic, Acid and Sanitizers

The cleaning chemistry in a typical food plant is surprisingly aggressive: 2–4% caustic soda at 60–80 °C for CIP, nitric or phosphoric acid for descale, quaternary ammonium or peracetic acid sanitizers, and hot-water rinses. Carbon steel and ordinary galvanized grating pit and rust within months in this service; stainless steel 316 survives but is expensive and can still corrode under chlorides at warm temperatures. FRP grating in food-contact or food-zone service is normally specified in isophthalic polyester or vinyl ester resin, which both resist caustic and dilute acid, and is supplied with a smooth or grit-top resin-rich surface that will not harbor biofilm.

Hygiene, FDA/USDA Considerations and Slip Resistance

Processors and their auditors look closely at how the deck is built. Panels should be supported on non-corrosive beams (FRP structural profiles or coated steel), clipped at every support, and edged with banding so there is no exposed cut edge where product can lodge. Because FRP is non-porous and does not rust, it avoids the recurring problems of steel grating — oxide particles contaminating product zones, weld seams trapping biofilm, and coating chips appearing on the floor. Food-grade FRP grating is specified for a smooth, non-porous, resin-rich surface that does not shed glass fibers and can be washed to a hygienic condition. Processors and auditors look for seams that can be sealed, rounded edges, and a lack of crevices where organic matter can collect. ZeAllgrate panels are cut with routed edges and can be edge-banded; clips and fasteners are SS304/SS316 to avoid rust staining. The resin system itself is chosen to be inert under the cleaning regime — this is the practical equivalent of food-contact compliance for a walking surface, which is not itself a food-contact component but must not shed contaminants into the product zone.

Slip resistance is critical. Washdown floors are continuously wet, and in meat and oil processing they can also be greasy. Grit-top (quartz-sand) panels deliver dry COF 0.6–0.8 and wet COF 0.5–0.7 per ASTM C1028-style testing; for very oily zones, convex or serrated tops are specified. The open mesh also lets water and oil fall through rather than pooling underfoot.

Drainage and Installation Details

Compared with tiled or epoxy floors, elevated grating also removes the need for continuous re-coating: epoxy delaminates under hot caustic and thermal shock, and tile grout harbors biofilm. FRP grating's open mesh and non-porous surface eliminate both failure modes. Designers lay FRP washdown floors on a slight slope toward floor drains, with the mesh running perpendicular to the drainage direction so water crosses the open cells rather than lying in them. Support spacing is chosen from ZeAllgrate load-span tables for the expected live load (typically 5–7.5 kN/m² for processing floors). Panels are clipped with SS304/SS316 FRP grating clips on every support beam, with a 3–5 mm expansion gap and a minimum 40 mm bearing. Edge banding and toe boards close the gap between grating and wall, eliminating places where product or water can accumulate.

Designing for Drainage, Cleanability and GMP Audits

Washdown flooring is only as good as the drainage behind it. Processors slope the underlying plinth at 1–2% toward floor drains, run the grating mesh perpendicular to the drainage direction, and specify open mesh (typically 38×38 mm, about two-thirds open area) so that water, product and sanitizers fall through rather than sheet across the deck. Toe boards and edge trim close the gap between grating and wall, eliminating the crevices where organic matter can collect — a point that auditors routinely inspect. Where a spill must not fall to the level below, solid-top FRP covers are specified instead of open mesh.

Cleanability follows the same logic. A smooth, resin-rich surface wipes down with the same hot caustic washdown used on equipment; there are no pores, no welds to trap residue, and no rust to stain the deck. Barcol hardness 40–50 (D2583) and water absorption below 0.5% (D570) mean the surface resists scuffing from boots and carts and does not wick cleaning chemicals into the panel. For high-care zones, ZeAllgrate supplies routed edge finishes and can factory-cut equipment penetrations so that on-site fabrication — and the dust it creates — is minimized.

ZeAllgrate Food & Beverage Solutions

ZeAllgrate supplies molded FRP grating in 25/30/38/50 mm thicknesses on standard 1220×3660 mm panels, with 38×38 or 50×50 mm mesh, in ISO polyester or vinyl ester resin, grit-top or smooth surfaces, and SS304/SS316 clips. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is FRP grating food-safe for processing floors?

A: FRP walking surfaces are not themselves food-contact parts, but ZeAllgrate panels use non-porous, resin-rich surfaces that do not rust, do not shed fibers and can be cleaned with the same caustic and acid washdown used on equipment. The resin system is selected against the plant's actual cleaning chemistry.

Q: Which surface is best for wet, greasy floors?

A: Grit-top (quartz sand) panels deliver wet COF around 0.5–0.7 and are the standard for dairies and bottling halls. In meat and oil processing where grease films build up, convex or serrated tops offer additional bite underfoot.

Q: How does FRP compare with stainless steel grating on cost?

FRP is materially lighter and lower cost than 316 stainless, needs no painting, and can be cut and fitted on site without hot work. Stainless may still be chosen where it is already the plant standard, but FRP almost always wins on total installed and lifecycle cost in washdown service.
