FRP Grating Shipping, Packaging & Logistics: Export Guide

FRP grating is a bulky, low-density product: light per square meter, but large in volume. Get the packaging and container loading wrong and a perfect production order arrives with cracked panels, scuffed edges and a dispute with the forwarder. Get it right and 2000–3000 m² of grating cross the ocean intact. This export guide covers how FRP grating is packed, loaded, documented and shipped — from bundling and ISPM-15 crates to incoterms and customs.

Packaging for Ocean Freight

Molded and pultruded panels are flat, rigid and relatively brittle at the edges, so packaging protects against abrasion, impact and stack crush. ZeAllgrate bundles panels tightly, edge-protects every stack, and uses corner boards and plastic stretch wrap to keep bundles dry and stable. Bundles are strapped and mounted on export pallets; for mixed or fragile loads, we use wooden crates. All wooden packaging for export is heat-treated and marked ISPM-15 to meet phytosanitary rules on arrival.

Packaging ElementPurpose
Bundles + steel strappingHeld stack together, prevents shifting in transit
Edge protection / corner boardsStops strap crush and edge chipping
Plastic stretch wrapKeeps panels clean, dry and UV/dust protected
Wooden pallets / cratesForklift handling; crates for mixed or fragile orders
ISPM-15 heat-treated woodMeets import phytosanitary requirements

Container Loading Optimization

FRP grating economics hinge on cube utilization. A standard 40 ft high-cube (HC) container holds roughly 2000–3000 m² of 38 mm molded grating, constrained by both volume and the container weight limit of about 25–28 tons. Because FRP is light (~1.7 g/cm³), volume — not weight — is usually the limiting factor, so panels are laid flat, stacked and distributed evenly across the container floor. Proper load distribution avoids the concentrated spots that cause panel cracking, and dunnage prevents bundles from shifting. Pultruded sections and fabricated assemblies are loaded to make best use of the tall cube height.

Incoterms and Shipping Terms

Most Chinese FRP exports ship FOB Shanghai or Ningbo, but buyers can choose the level of logistics control they want.

  • FOB — supplier delivers on board the vessel; buyer arranges and pays ocean freight and insurance.
  • CFR / CIF — supplier arranges and pays freight to destination (CIF also includes marine insurance).
  • DDP — supplier handles delivery, duties and clearance to the buyer’s door; convenient but the most supplier-managed option.

State your preferred incoterm and destination port in the RFQ so freight is quoted correctly.

Documentation Package

Exporting grating is paperwork-intensive. Every ZeAllgrate shipment carries the full document set buyers need to clear customs and prove compliance:

  • Commercial invoice — value, terms, HS code and buyer/seller details.
  • Packing list — bundle-by-bundle count, dimensions and weights.
  • Bill of lading — ocean transport document.
  • Certificate of origin — for preference and customs purposes.
  • Material certificate / COA — resin grade, glass content, batch number, mechanical values.
  • Test reports — ASTM D790/D2583/D570/E84/C581/C1028 as ordered; DNV/ABS or third-party reports where specified.

Shipping Damage Prevention and Transit Times

Damage almost always comes from poor strapping, missing edge protection or over-stacking. With bundled, edge-protected, ISPM-15 crated loads and balanced container stuffing, damage is rare. Plan the schedule around transit: ocean freight to major destinations typically takes 2–5 weeks depending on route — shorter to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, longer to the US West Coast, East Coast and Northern Europe. Add 7–15 days production (15–20 for custom/fabricated) on top.

Route RegionTypical Ocean Transit
Southeast Asia7–14 days
Middle East18–28 days
Europe (main ports)28–40 days
US West Coast14–25 days
US East Coast / Gulf30–45 days
Africa / Latin America25–45 days by destination

Customs, Tariffs and HS Codes

FRP products fall under composite-glass-fabric HS classifications; the exact code depends on the finished form (grating/panel vs profile). We state the HS code and value on the commercial invoice and packing list so your broker can clear the shipment smoothly. Confirm any preferential-origin or free-trade documentation needed for your market — a correct certificate of origin can materially reduce landed duties.

ZeAllgrate Export Logistics

Since 2004, ZeAllgrate has shipped molded and pultruded FRP grating to 45+ countries, FOB Shanghai/Ningbo with CFR, CIF and DDP available. We optimize container loading, package to ISPM-15, and supply the full documentation and COA/test-report package with every order. Tell us your destination and preferred incoterm and we will return a delivered-landed estimate alongside the product quote.

Loading Plan and Container Stuffing

A safe container load is engineered, not stacked. Because FRP panels are flat and light, the constraint is cube — a 40 ft HC holds roughly 2000–3000 m² of 38 mm molded grating, well under the ~25–28 ton weight limit. We lay bundles flat, distribute them evenly across the container floor to avoid concentrated point loads, and use dunnage and strapping so nothing shifts in a 30-day voyage. Long pultruded sections run the container length; fabricated assemblies and loose hardware go on top or in the gaps. A documented loading photo set — taken at stuffing — is included with the shipping files so the consignee can see how the container was built before it arrives.

Insurance, Damage Prevention and Claims

Even well-packed loads can suffer. Prevention is layered: edge boards stop strap cutting, stretch wrap keeps panels clean and dry, ISPM-15 crates protect fragile fabricated assemblies, and balanced stuffing removes the movement that causes chafe. For CIF shipments we arrange marine insurance; for FOB shipments we recommend the buyer cover it. If damage does occur, the loading photos, packed packing list and batch documentation make a fast, clean claim — and because panels are modular, a single damaged bundle can be re-shipped without replacing the whole order.

Lead-Time Planning for Imports

Imported grating takes longer than a local purchase, so plan backwards from your installation date. Add production (7–15 days standard, 15–20 days cut-to-size/fabricated), then ocean transit (2–5 weeks by destination), then customs clearance and inland cartage. For schedule-critical projects, confirm resin availability and hold a production slot at PO stage, and build in a buffer before the installation window. Standard molded panels ship faster; phenolic, FDA-grade or large fabricated orders should be ordered earliest.

Planning StageTypical Time
Quote and drawing approval1–2 business days
Production (standard)7–15 days
Production (cut/fabricated)15–20 days
Ocean freight2–5 weeks by destination
Customs + inland delivery3–10 days

Ordering early also protects against container-space shortages in peak season, when freight rates and berth availability tighten. With ZeAllgrate, the production slot is confirmed on your order acknowledgement, and every shipment leaves with the full document set so clearance is the last, easy step.

Unloading and Receiving at the Destination

Careful loading pays off only if the consignee unloads just as carefully. On arrival, bundles should be lifted by the straps or pallet — never speared by a single fork tine through the panel stack — and stored flat off the ground, not leaned on edge. Check the bundle count against the packing list, inspect edges and faces for chafe or cracking, and match the batch number on the delivery to the COA before installation. Because FRP is light, it is tempting to toss panels around, but dropped corners chip the resin and expose glass. A short receiving checklist protects the warranty and keeps the claim window clean if anything was damaged in transit.

Choosing the Right Incoterm for Your Operation

The best shipping term depends on how much logistics control you want. If your freight forwarder is strong and you want the tightest product price, FOB Shanghai/Ningbo leaves ocean buying in your hands. If you prefer one landed number and a single supplier responsible to destination, choose CFR or CIF — CIF adds marine insurance. If you want the door delivered with duties handled and no customs involvement on your side, DDP is the convenience option, priced accordingly. For first-time importers, CIF or DDP removes the complexity of booking ocean freight and clearance; for experienced traders with established forwarders, FOB usually wins on cost. Tell us which term fits your operation and we will quote that door.

Good logistics is invisible: the container arrives on schedule, the panels are undamaged, and the paperwork clears customs without a query. The manufacturer’s job is to make that the normal case — through correct packaging, optimized loading, honest transit planning and a complete document set. It is the part of an FRP order buyers rarely see until it goes wrong, and the part we have refined across shipments to 45+ countries since 2004.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much FRP grating fits in a 40ft HC container?

A: Roughly 2000–3000 m² of 38 mm molded grating, limited mainly by volume rather than the ~25–28 ton weight cap because FRP is light.

Q: Do your wooden pallets and crates meet import rules?

A: Yes — all export wood packaging is heat-treated and ISPM-15 marked to satisfy destination phytosanitary requirements.

Q: What shipping terms can you quote?

A: We quote FOB Shanghai/Ningbo as standard, and can arrange CFR, CIF or DDP with freight, insurance and (for DDP) clearance handled on request.
