UV Degradation & Outdoor Weathering
How UV Attacks FRP
Ultraviolet photons excite the resin polymer chains, causing photo-oxidation and chain scission. The surface resin erodes into a powdery chalk, the glass fibers underneath bloom to the surface, gloss fades and colour lightens. Crucially, this is a surface phenomenon — structural strength remains largely intact even after visible chalking.
What Drives the Rate of Aging
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| UV intensity | Higher at lower latitude, higher altitude and near reflective surfaces (water, snow) |
| Temperature | Heat accelerates oxidation; hot, sunny roofs age faster than shaded decks |
| Moisture | Rain and dew hydrolyze the resin synergistically with UV — wet plus sun is worst |
| Oxygen | Required for photo-oxidation; confined or submerged service ages much slower |
| Surface orientation | Vertical facades weather slower than horizontal, fully exposed decks |
Which Resin Survives Best Outdoors
| Resin | Intrinsic UV Resistance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl ester | Best | Ester end-groups are more stable; preferred for coastal/marine |
| Isophthalic polyester | Good | Workhorse outdoor grade with UV stabilizer |
| Orthophthalic polyester | Fair | Chalks faster; specify stabilizer for any direct sun |
| Phenolic | Not typically pigmented | Used for fire; not chosen for UV service |
All outdoor grades should carry a UV stabilizer additive; resin choice alone is not enough.
UV Stabilizer Systems
UV Absorbers (UVA)
Benzophenone and benzotriazole compounds absorb UV energy and re-emit it as harmless heat. Typical loading 0.5-1.5%.
HALS
Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers scavenge the free radicals created by photo-oxidation. Often combined with UVA for synergistic protection at 0.5-1.5%.
Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
A white pigment that both opacifies and scatters UV; ideal for light-coloured (gray/white) panels. Loading about 1-2%.
Carbon Black
The most effective UV blocker for black-only formulations; loading 2-5%. Not available in other colours.
C-Veil: The First Line of Defence
A C-glass or synthetic surfacing veil placed at the mold face produces a 0.3-0.5 mm resin-rich, fiber-free surface. Without it, the first layer of glass fibers sits just under the resin skin and blooms as soon as the resin chalks away. With a veil, the resin layer erodes slowly over years before fibers are exposed. Always specify a veil for outdoor direct-exposure panels.
How Long Will It Last Outdoors
| Configuration | Expected Outdoor Life | Cosmetic Change |
|---|---|---|
| UV-stabilized isophthalic / vinyl ester + C-veil | 15-25 years | Slight chalking and colour lightening; no structural loss |
| UV-stabilized, no veil | 10-15 years | Moderate chalking; fiber bloom after about 8 years |
| Non-stabilized resin | 2-5 years | Visible chalking and fading; surface erosion |
Indicative values for moderate UV climates; coastal, high-altitude or tropical service ages faster. Structural capacity is unaffected by cosmetic chalking.
Accelerated Weathering Tests
| Standard | Apparatus | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM G154 | QUV fluorescent UV + condensation | Cycles UV light and water condensation; the most common outdoor-aging screen |
| ASTM G155 | Xenon-arc weather-o-meter | Full-spectrum sun-like light; better colour-fade correlation than QUV |
| ASTM D4329 | Fluorescent UV exposure for plastics | Plastics-specific UV exposure practice |
| ISO 4892 | Xenon-arc (international equivalent) | EU specification reference |
| Evaluation | Method |
|---|---|
| Gloss retention | ASTM D523 gloss meter |
| Colour change | Delta E per ASTM D2244 (colorimeter) |
| Chalking | Visual rating (ASTM D4214) |
| Typical test duration | 1000 to 3000 hours (indicative; customer-specified) |
Upkeep and Colour Stability
Maintenance
No repainting is needed — FRP does not rust. Periodic pressure-washing removes salt, bird-dropping and soot deposits that otherwise trap moisture and accelerate local aging. Inspect for heavy chalking on a 3-5 year cycle.
Colour Stability
Pigmented colours fade less than clear gel-coats. Gray and dark green are the most UV-stable; red and blue organic pigments fade faster. Custom colours use UV-stable inorganic pigments for long-term retention.
Coastal / Marine
UV reflected off seawater plus salt spray accelerates aging. Specify vinyl ester plus UV stabilizer plus C-veil plus SS316 clips; wash down quarterly.
No Structural Cost
Surface chalking is cosmetic. Once the veil erodes, a thin touch-up of matching gel-coat restores appearance without affecting load capacity.
